The Ainu are indigenous people of Northern Japan and Far-Eastern Russia. Their numbers are difficult to estimate.
Officially, there are 25.000 Ainus in Japan, although unofficially that number can go as high as 200.000
In Russia, until now, there were no more any Ainu left officially, but now it is acknowledged there are about 100 of the living in the Kurile Islands.
That might be an important issue to decide on the status of the Russian occupied Kurile Islands for the future, like an establishment of the autonomous Ainu area.
Ainu were thought to be perhaps of the Caucasian stock given their lighter skin and facial hair, but that theory was debunked by the recent DNA testing which found out their genetic similarities to not only Japanese but also to Okinawans and many SIberian ethnic groups - Tungus, Udegey, Nivkh, Soyots..etc
Some are speculationg that the Ainu may be descendants of a pre-historic race that also produced indigenous Australian people...
