Anjouan is an autonomous island, part of the union of Comoros.
It is located in the Indian Ocean.
The most powerful of the Comorian sultanates, it came under French protection in 1886 and was annexed in 1912.

In 1975 it became part of the independent State of Comoros, but seceded from the Comoros (together with Moheli)
in 1997 until it rejoined the new Union of Comoros in 2002.

Anjouan strongman, Mohamed Bacar held illegal elections in 2007 and, again, declared Anjouan independent of the Comoros,
but the island was invaded by the African Union and French forces, Bacar escaped, and the island rejoined the Union in 2008.
