Kabardins are part of the larger Adygea (Circassian) nation. They number about 520.000 in Russia with significant groups in Turkey, Jordan and Georgia.
They are Sunni Muslims except a Christian Kabardin population of Mozdok area in North Ossetia, taken away from Kabarda by Stalin.
Kabardins long resisted Russian advances into Caucasus but were finally subjugated in the 1860s .

They frequently rose in rebeliion against harsh Russian rule.
In 1917, there was short-lived Republic of Northern Caucasus, but both, White and Red Russians were wary of the Circassian nationalism and both fought it.

Soviet rule brought even more misery for the Kabardians and Balkars with whom they shared the "autonomous" oblast.

During WWII the Balkars were deported, but returned in 1957.
Now, the Kabardin nationalists work on unification of all Adygea (Circassian) nations free of Russian domination.
