The Zulu (amaZulu) are the largest South African ethnic group with about 11 million people living mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Their language is Bantu, specifically part of the Nguni subgroup.
THe Zulu kingdom played a major role in South African history during the 19th and 20th centuries.

KwaZulu was until 1994 a semi-independent Bantustan with the capital, first at Nongoma,
and after 1980 at Ulundi.
It was led by the outstanding politician, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who still leads the Zulu Inkhata Freedom Party in the new South Africa.
