Visited by the Icelandic Viking Leif Eriksson in the 11th century, it was a homeland of the Beaothuk (Mi'kmaq) Indians
before it was settled by the French, Irish, Scots and Basques.
The longest serving British colony founded in 1583 giving birth to the British Empire.
Existed as a dominion, reversed to the direct British rule, and joined Canada in 1949.

Traditional separatist sentiment is flaring up again recently.
It is based on its unique history and uneasy relations with the federal government in Ottowa.
