A large Canadian island off the east coast of North America, part of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Visited by the Icelandic Viking Leif Eriksson in the 11th century, it was a homeland of the Beaothuk (Mi'kmaq) Indians
before it was settled by the French, Irish, Scots and Basques.
The longest serving British colony founded in 1583 giving birth to the British Empire.
Existed as a dominion, reversed to the direct British rule, and joined Canada in 1949.
