RAAN is an autonomous region of Nicaragua covering a vast territoy between the Rio Wangly to the north and the middle course of Rio Grande de Matagalpa to the south,
reaching the Caribbean coast to the east and Isabelia Mountains to the west.

The population is composef mostly by Miskito Indians with the small group of Sumo in the inner most zones.
The area is claimed by the self-declared Nation of Moskitia.

It contains the Bosawas Nature Reserve.
