Rodrigues was discovered in 1528 by the Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues.
The Island was colonized by the French in 1691 and 1735, but conquered by the British
in 1809 and made part of Mauritius.
The islands voted strongly against independence in 1967, but nonetheless gained it as part of Mauritius the following year.
Regional autonomy was granted to the island in 2001.
