Largest island in the Mediterranean Sea it forms an autonomous region of Italy Rich in history, Sicily was settled first by the
ancient tribe of Sicani from the Iberian Peninsula, followed by the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Greeks.
It became the first Roman province outside the Italian peninsula in 242BC.
The Roman rule lasted for about 700 years. Vandals followed the Romans in 440AD, but it was taken by the Byzantine Empire in 535 AD,
followed by the Arab (965-1072) and Norman rule (1068-1194).

Then it was a period of the Kingdom of Sicily which lasted from 1130 to 1816, when it was merged with the Kingdom of Naples to
form was merged with the Kingdom of Naples to form the Kingdom of Two Sicilies.

In 1861 its areas were united with the Kingdom of Italy. Durin WWII, the Sicilian separatist movement MIS assisted the allies
in liberating the island from the Germans.
This movement is active to this day but garners a very scant following.
Its best electoral result was in 1947 when they obtained 8.8% of all the votes.

Region of Sicily has an area of 25.711 sq km and the population of 5.050.500 (2010).
Its capital is located in the city of Palermo/Palermu.
