Tabasaran live in the foothills of the mountains of northeast Dagestan, in the valleys of the rivirs Darvag, Rubas, Chirah-Chai and
Karchak Su.
Their language belongs to the southeast group of Dagestani languages (the Lezgi-Samur group).
The number about 200.000 and are mostly Sunni Muslims.
World record holder in the Pole Vault, Yelena Isinbayeva is Tabasaran.
There is a small nationalist movement there allied with the Lezgins.
