It was founded as a "homeland" for the Venda ethnic group, speakers of the Venda language.
Declared self-governing in 1973, made an independent state in 1979.
Prior to independence it was expanded to form one contigous territory.
The majority of the Venda peoples in Southern Africa lived within its confines.
Abolished in 1994 and absorbed again into South Africa.
VaVenda traditional monarchy is recognized by the South African government.
