Spanish until 1823, western Chiapas was annexed to Mexico.
More of Chiapas became Mexican on disintegration of the Central American Federation in 1842, and the remainder was
taken from Guatemala in the early 1880s.

Neglected and backward, with the majority of the indigenous population, chiapas have seen the rise of the
Zapatista Army of National Liberation and the rebellion against the federal government.

Despite talks, the EXLN still controls many areas of Chiapas.
