One of the historical Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Mercia was centeredon the valley of the River Trent
and its tributaries now known as the English Midlands.

The name Mercia is a Latinization of the Old English "Mierce" or "Myrce" meaning "border people".
That name is used today in the historical context and by those who would like to restore the old regional division of England.

The main organization campaigning for Mercian self-determination.
The Acting Witan of Mercia, advocates a return to an agrarian economy in the region.

Presently, Mercia, with more restricted boundaries is subdivided into two councils:
West Midlands and East Midlands.

These two regions have the combined population of 9.439.516 (2001)
and area 11.053 sq km

The first true Mercian Monarch at Tamworth was Creoda in AD 584 on december 4, AD 918, Mercia was annexed to Wessex to form the Kingdom of England.
